It is of life-and-death (to the marriage) importance that a wife and mother not make her husband feel as though the children are sufficient for her fulfillment. One caller, with her husband on the line, made that very claim. I couldn’t believe she could be so blindly cruel to him and expect him to still be there for her in any size, shape, or form — which, believe it or not, was the reason she called: to complain that he didn’t do enough for her! One woman, after hearing this call, wrote to me:

“Initially I was shocked that she would say this in front of him, and let’s be honest here — in front of you, too! But as I got real with myself, I realized that what was so shocking was that I have said things that are just as hurtful to my husband. You really hit home with me when you said that behaving this way is cruel and abusive. I wanted to cry.

You also pointed out to the caller that she need not be concerned with her husband behaving in a more loving, attentive manner toward her. Instead, you said, she should concentrate on providing him the love and affection and position of importance he deserves, and that he (since men are ‘not as complex as women’) will automatically return it to her.

I was frightened as you talked about men leaving their wives for other women who make them feel good about themselves. As you talked to this woman about how difficult it would be to raise her children without this father who provides for the family and loves them, I realized that I never want to be in that situation.

Thank you, Dr. Laura, for opening my eyes to my own selfishness, self-centeredness, and destructive behavior. On this Valentine’s Day, I am committing to doing what is right for my relationship with my husband: to nurture him and our marriage with the same energy I put toward nurturing my daughter.”
